GE 1994 Episode 1: Paulitorial
Note: this is not a transcript, but a working draft of the script, so there are differences in the aired version.
PAUL: When I started out in radio, there was no
virtual reality, only grim reality. Nfld had been
discovered by John Cabot and we had only one premier.
Ish Lundrigan was a broadcasting god and Jerry Dobbin
was nothing more than a cornerboy. The only time
you heard blues music was when an American warship
called into port. But now that's all changed.
And you know something, I like it this way.
I was closing the window here in the studio earlier,
wondering what to say in my traditional show-ending
editorial, when my mind went blank. All I could do
was look at the sea . . . our studios are just above
the harbour. I was looking out to the sea, the codless
North Atlantic, trying to come up with some reason for
Nflders to stay in Nfld.
On a beautiful day, there is no more breathtaking sight
than the sun going down on the water somewhere off the
coast of Nfld. But is that enough ?
A weekend in the woods, fire crackling nightly, drinks,
cards, a few trout or salmon in the creel, or a moose
seasoning on a tree branch. Is that enough ?
The graveyard at the end of the road that squirms through
the community, where parents and grandparents and great
grandparents lie. Is that enough ?
What keeps us here ? Love ? Fear ? Are we afraid of the
world that didn't really arrive here until the 50's ?
Do we view life away from Nfld as an unfathomable sea of its own ?
Why do we stay here with astronomic poverty, the fishery in
shambles, epidemic unemployment, no industry and a shrinking
population ? In the long run, what keeps us here ?
Nothing, I believe. And I love it that way. The zen of
staying in Nfld. No reason to. So let's.
