Note: this is not a transcript, but a working draft of the script, so there may be differences in the aired version.

NUCLEAR ATTACK

ERLING:	It was the hot August of 1961 when a
	summer replacement at the BCN, thinking it was an episode of Salty
	Tales, cued up this tape before stepping out for a cool bottle of Coca-
	Cola.

SFX:	AIR RAID SIREN

ANNOUNCER:	This is a real emergency. I repeat, this is a real emergency. This is
	the Newfoundland Emergency Broadcasting System. An enemy
	attack on Newfoundland has been detected. Sirens are now
	sounding or have sounded the attack warning. This is a real
	emergency. Take cover immediately. Here are some instructions:

	- If you are at home go to the basement or strongest part of your
	house which offers the best protection;

	- Take your battery radio with you;

	- If your radio is not on, turn it on immediately. I repeat, turn on your
	radio immediately.

ERLING:	I remember it like it was yesterday. Mom rushing across the street to
	Mr. Kearney's. The two of them ... embracing on the lawn. Dad with
	his pants around his ankles chugging the Christmas Sherry. The
	rising chorus of shouts and gasps and sobs from all over the
	neighbourhood, and then silence.

ANNOUNCER:	Keep listening to this station for further instructions. For the
	Newfoundland Emergency Broadcasting System, I'm Gordon
	Shelley. (CHANGES TONE TO JOLLY) If you have just joined us,
	please stay tuned. This Is A Real Emergency.

SFX:	AIR RAID SIREN OUT

ERLING:	Some people never forgave the BCN for the mistake. I thought it
	was instructive, that it taught us all a little lesson in humility. Taught
	us to appreciate what little time we have on the earth. And to be
	grateful for it.
