WORDWORKS - SHOW 6
PAUL: Joining me in the studio is Kathleen Hanrahan, our resident
book worm, with another instalment of Word Works.
KATH: Hello, Paul. I hear you had a wild time at the Toime of
Toimes Pageant.
PAUL: I have to confess, I was completely taken in by the whole
thing. I bought into the riot, the looting ... at one point I even
began to fear for my life.
KATH: Great, hey ?
PAUL: Tremendous. Now Kathleen, you've got two new releases
with you, the first is ... ?
KATH: First, by Dr. Judy Stoyles, "What Men Really Want."
PAUL: In what regard, Kathleen ?
KATH: In emotional terms, Paul.
PAUL: And how did Dr. "Judy", a woman I might note, divine what
we lads of the patriarchy truly seek in this vale of tears ?
KATH: She's a clinical psychologist here in town, so she drew from
the experience of her patients ...
PAUL: Sensitive men, I'd guess ....
KATH: ... and she conducted thousands of interviews.
PAUL: Well, I certainly didn't fill out one of her questionnaires. So
tell me what I really want, Kathleen.
KATH: More nurturing.
PAUL: (laughs) You're not serious.
KATH: There is a young and lonely boy somewhere inside you
Paul. A boy that needs to be hugged. You want less casual
sex and more intimacy.
PAUL: (roars with laughter) NO WAY! Is that in there ?
KATH: Yes. I take it you don't agree.
PAUL: Don't get me wrong Kathleen, I'm all for intimacy. Dinner
before hand, a little post-coital chit-chat, I'm a sensitive as
the next guy but if you want to know what men really want ...
KATH: I do.
PAUL: Well, for starters, jeez ... this is a little difficult Kathleen.
KATH: No need to be embarrassed around me Paul.
PAUL: Definitely more ... A.M. loving, you know first thing when you
wake up in the morning. And I think it's fair to say that most
men want one of those new Dodge Rams, the one with the
V-10 Viper engine. And more gravy, men would definitely
like to see the bad image of gravy rehabilitated.
KATH: You've got to be kidding.
PAUL: You asked.
KATH: Well, Paul, I can see you don't need a copy of this. But for
those folks who might want an in-depth look at "What Men
Really Want", Dr. Judy Stoyles's book is published by
Nipkopf for $22.99.
PAUL: Next ?
KATH: "Murphkin: A Life In Gander", the much anticipated
biography of Newfoundland novelist, Nicholas Murphkin.
This "big" book is by Ramon Pugsley.
PAUL: I did a course on Murphkin in University. The grand historic
sweep, characters by the hundreds, the almost life denying
pathos, the back-breaking task of carrying hard cover
editions of his work up stairs ...tremendous books.
KATH: Considered by many to be this island's greatest writer, a
native son who, nonetheless, lived as a Russian Novelist.
PAUL: He was born?
KATH: Nick Murphy.
PAUL: There are pictures here, from his early years in Gander,
looking tired and emotional aboard his sleigh, and look here
in his great fur hat. Here's the dacha near Twillingate.
KATH: That particular photograph was taken just before Bertha
Harnum rejected his marriage proposal.
PAUL: An event which, really, shaped his adult life.
KATH: Yes, Murphkin fell into a desperate black depression that
was to last the rest of his days.
PAUL: Took to gambling.
KATH: Tormented by crippling bunions and corns.
PAUL: Caring for his drunken brother's enormous family of ...?
KATH: Oh 36 yes ... and being thrown in prison for producing a
scurilous satirical pamphlet attacking the colonial's education
system.
PAUL: And killed in a duel on the day of his release from Her
Majesty's.
KATH: That fact is questioned in the biography.
PAUL: Oh?
KATH: Murphkin was about to duel, had walked ten paces, aimed
his pistol and was, at the very moment he was to fire, blind
sided by a milk wagon, ironically driven by James Fitzpatrick
the man who Bertha Harnum, Murphkin's one true love,
eventually married.
PAUL: An amazing story. That's Ramon Pugsley's Murphkin: A Life
In Gander. It's published by Mowdown House and retails for
$89.
KATH: Seems expensive but it is over 1000 pages.
PAUL: Comprehensive. Thank's for coming in Kathleen.
KATH: Good to have you back Paul.
PAUL: Thanks so much.
KATH: Next is "At The Cabin" an all Newfoundland book of erotica
by women, for women.
PAUL: Stories and ...?
KATH: Yes Paul, some pictorial material.
PAUL: (rubbing hands together) But this is a high-tone affair right,
nothing seedy.
KATH: You can glower guilt-free.
PAUL: Great.
KATH: I think this is long overdue, Newfoundland woman are re-
claiming the erotic, taking it back from men, challenging the
phalocracy.
PAUL: Mmmmmm.
KATH: As only work by and for woman could do.
PAUL: By, for and with women incidently.
KATH: There are sections of women with other women.
PAUL: And I have no problem with that Kathleen, but ... don't you
think this is cheating. I mean if you are going to be a
lesbian, go for it, but if you're going to strap this ... apparatus
on ... well I mean, men come equipped.
PAUL: Photographs ?
KATH: And next is a ...
PAUL: I didn't see any photographs ...
KATH: ... book on self-loving for women, called "Push Here, My
Dear" ...
P: Yo, come on, now you're really kidding me, Kathleen.
K: No. Paul, this is a very serious subject in these days of
sexual liberation and choice in Nfld.
P: Got any pictures in that one ?
K: It's published by The Island Of Press.
P: Kathleen, you can't be telling me that women ... jiggy jiggy
themselves.
K: It's only men who can pleasure us ? That's rich.
P: Women need ... external stimulation.
K: That's why God gave us hands, Paul.
P: Oh.
K: And I can guarantee you that Ram chargers and gravy have
nothing to do with what we're looking for in a fulfilling sexual
life.
