GE 1996-7 Season 3 Episode 16: Noise
Note: this is not a transcript, but a working draft of the script, so there may be differences in the aired version.
PAUL: It’s been a long long time,
weeks even, since we played
the most popular game show on
the BCN ... “What’s That Noise
From Nfld.”
I bet you’ve almost forgotten
what the sound sounds like.
So, Hollis Duffitt, blow a
fresh, reverberating breeze
through our ears.
SFX: THAT NOISE
There you are, re-acquainted
with the noise from the
eastern most point in North
America.
Now all you must do is figure
out what the heck it is.
Down into the mail bag I go,
where seekers of souvenirs and
mementoes send their guesses,
and therefor their hopes and
dreams.
And here is an entry, all the
way from ... Badger, Nfld.
This is easy to read, large
block letters, and it says:
“That is the sound of the BCN
coal stokers union having the
life squeezed out of it by
management” ... well, I
should have known we’d get
something like this sometime.
Non-Nfld. listeners should be
advised that contract
negotiations here at the BCN
between management and several
of the trade union groups have
reached a delicate point.
And as this letter isn’t
signed, and now that I look at
it, the stamp isn’t cancelled,
and there’s no return address,
I can guess it came from a
union sympathizer.
Yours truly has maintained,
with some success if I do say
so myself, a certain distance
from the conflagration, I
remain a friendly, if you
will.
However, there’s no way we can
accept this as a contest
entry.
So, back in to the mail sack I
dive, coming up with this e-
mail from ... Thomas
Brupbacher at the University
of British Columbia ! Wow, an
educated guess !
Anyway, Thomas writes: “We
know the noise: it’s the
sound recorded underneath pack
ice !
Cheers,” signed “Beth, Kaley,
Juergen and Thomas Brupbacher,
Microwave spectroscopists
extraordinaires.”
No, friends, that is not the
right answer, you don’t know
what the noise is.
Just goes to show that
learning isn’t everything !
Please try again.
Let’s hear the noise one more
time before we go, please,
Hollis.
SFX: THE NOISE
If you think you know what it
is that it is, then enter the
What’s That Noise From Nfld
contest.
Send your guess in an envelope
clearly marked just so to the
contest at The Great Eastern,
c/o the BCN, 342 Duckworth
St., St. John’s, Nfld., A1C
1H5.
Here, now, Nightingale, a
group with a distinctly Nfld
ingredient, who perform music
from Nfld., Ireland,
Scandinavia and, as on this
piece, from Quebec. “J’entend
le Moulin / Louis Cyr.”
