GE 1998-9 Season 5 Episode 26: What's That Noise?
Note: this is not a transcript, but a working draft of the script, so there may be differences in the aired version.
PAUL: It's rowdy time ! Rackets and uproar, din and
disorder ... these are the things I love so well !
Get ready now for the onset of the sound that won't
go away, What's that noise from Newfoundland.
Hollis Duffett is our minder of the good vibration
and only he knows how it goes.
SFX: THE NOISE
Wow ... is there anywhere else that could possibly
come from but Newfoundland ?
Down I stretch, way down, almost scraping the bottom of
the bag, and there I find this, an entry all the way
from Susan Lantos, in Ottawa, Ontario. Susan writes:
"Dear Great Eastern: I believe I know what that noise was!
It's the sound of seals under water calling out. It's a
wonderful cascading sound isn't it..."
Thanks for writing, Susan. What sayest thou, Hollis
Duffett, our audio umpire ?
SFX: THE WINNER'S THEME
I love it ! Another winner ! Susan Lantos of Ottawa, that
is a great guess, seals underwater it is, off the coast of
the mainland section of our province, Labrador. They do
sound marvellous, don't they ? Congratulations, Susan,
your BCN souvenir is in the mail.
Now, this being our last show to Canada for ... awhile,
I guess, and the fact being that you won't hear the
contest to guess at the unknown, the NRTC - Newfoundland
Radio and Telegraph Commission - has deemed it illegal
for us to broadcast our new noise to our countrymates,
so the Newfoundland audience only will hear what our new
noise is.
Hollis ?
SFX: TONE
The new Krupps-Funkenscheit noise blocker works pretty
well, hey ?
Apologies to our Canadian listeners, but for those of you
locals who may have the answer to our sonic query, send it
to us at The What's That Noise From Nfld Contest, c/o the
BCN, 342 Duckworth St., St. John's, A1C 1H5.
Or you can e-mail your guess, and that address is

There's no blocking these sounds. Here's a tune from Fur
Packed Action's new cd, "The Dull Thud of Fur" called
"Employee of the Month."
