Erling Biggs
ERLING BIGGS IS BCN’s Marconi Award-winning weather watchdog, and the much-loved voice that brings you your Traffic Alert. Erling was born and raised in Gander to an old radio family. His father, Benmont Biggs, was a star performer for the BCN during the Golden Age of Radio. Erling attended Gander Collegiate, and was awarded a fellowship to Christ’s College, Cambridge, where he received a double first in Classics. He moved to St. John’'s in 1982 and sought work at the BCN to see him through the lean years while he pursued a career as a writer. His first novel, Gearbox (1985), though commercially unsuccessful, was short-listed for the Booker Prize. In 1993, he was a founding member of the Newfoundland League of Concrete Poets. Erling has won acclaim for the BCN with his solid and timely coverage of weather, traffic and public service updates, and he is among the loyal listenership’s favourite substitute hosts.
